Memory of Český les
Directed by Miroslav Anton
A film looking at the history of the coexistence of Czechs and Germans in the Bohemian Forest area. It focuses on the still-taboo subject of the evacuation of Sudeten Germans from Czechoslovakia after the Second World War, and features the testimonies of former inhabitants of the border area near Domažlice who were expelled from their homes. The film also points out that many houses that had existed in the Bohemian Forest for several centuries were destroyed.
Into the Land of (no)promise
Directed by David Vondráček
After the forced evacuation of Germans from Czechoslovak border areas, the first people to move into the hurriedly-abandoned houses were from the country's interior. Further waves, both voluntary and forced, included Hungarians from southern Slovakia, Ruthenians from north-western Romania and Protestant Czechs from former German Silesia. To what extent did, or could, the Sudetenland become a real home for these distinctive communities?
