The title is an effective characterisation of the darkly romantic personality of the great Czech poet Karel Hynek Mácha, the author of May (Máj, 1836). The story starts with Mácha on the way to the town of Litoměřice to take up a job with a notary. He is about to be married to Lori Šomková, who has just given birth to his son, but instead of the wedding, news comes of the poet's death. The film then recapitulates his final years: his relationship to Prague's theatrical and literary society, his meeting with Lori, his journeys through city and countryside in search of inspiration, his volatility, passion and jealousy and also the unselfishness for which he finally pays the price.
