In the mid-13th century the sons of the robber knight Kozlík capture the son of the Saxon count, Kristian, drawing the attention of the King to themselves. Lazar, a yeoman, joins them, but almost pays for it with his life. His daughter, Marketa, promised to God, is abducted by Kozlík's son Mikoláš and raped. After the royal sheriff, Pivo, slaughters almost all Kozlík's family, Marketa returns home, but is rejected by her father. The cruelty of the life of instinct, which as yet respects no order, changes into hope only at the close. Marketa, like Kozlík's daughter Alexandra, with whom Kristián has fallen in love, brings new life into the world.
