In autumn 1941 soldiers from the eastern Czechoslovak infantry battalion 11 are sent to defend the Libyan port of Tobruk, under attack from Rommel's Afrikakorps and four Italian divisions. Among the battalion's members is young Jewish soldier Jan Lieberman, who from the start has been picked on by racist corporal Kohák. Another new boy is the private Jiří Pospíchal. His naive and idealistic ideas of heroism and war are harshly confronted with the unbearable hell of the African desert, the daily threat to life and ever-present death. This all takes a cruel toll on him, one which only war can mete out.
