Jiřina Šiklová

Chair – CZ - Sociologist

She read history and philosophy at the Faculty of Arts of Charles University in Prague and graduated in 1958. In 1965, she co-founded the Department of Sociology at the Faculty of Arts of Charles University where she engaged in studying the youth and student movement. Because she signed the document Two Thousand Words, she was forced to leave the Faculty. She then worked as a cleaner and social worker. She could only publish her work under pseudonyms. Her signing of the Charter 77 brought another persecution by the Czechoslovak Communist Party, which culminated in her imprisonment in 1981. After 1989 she returned to the Faculty of Arts of Charles University. She was awarded a  first grade Medal for Merits in 1999.
