And the winner is...

A feature debut depicting the director and a girl named Bára, daughter of immigrants, who together discover the tradition of “tramping” – woodcraft with hiking and sense of community with the nature, based on the romantic idea of the American Wild West - in the Czech republic. Bára’s parents immigrated to Canada and she came to the Czech Republic to get to know the country of her roots. Honza is from Prague, he sings and plays the guitar. He always wanted to go to New York and be like Bob Dylan. Bára and Honza go on a trip to see the traditional tramping sites, some as old as a hundred years. The film follows their journey to the land of the free on the backdrop of only a forest, a campfire and vast skies. In the settlements of Ascalona, Toronto or Ztracenka they find the remains of a fantasy the Czech Tramps have been finding a refuge in every weekend.

Waiting Room

An original documentary about waiting – waiting as a cycle of life stories, of real life women and girls. This seemingly slow-moving documentary mosaic transforms at times into a cruel sociological probe into the modern world. All the pieces are connected by the waiting room at the main train station. Each of the seven protagonists is waiting for either something, or someone else. An merger of live action and documentary creates a platform for a seemingly impersonal narration that reveals much more than it appears to. The viewer is slowly put into the position of a voyeur, watching other people’s lives.

Czech Journal - Near Far East

The author takes us on a rather unusual road movie across Ukraine, which is close to due to family connections as well as friendships. On his trips to Ukraine the director meets with many people from different sides of the ideologically and politically divided Ukrainian society. Through the eyes of the camera, we observe everyday life in a war zone, looking at the situation on both sides of the front – the seemingly calm situation in the West of the country as well as tension in the Eastern war zones. The whole crew crosses the front line to the areas controlled by the separatists at the time when both sides breached the cease-fire. Is there an end to this useless war that so often puts relatives against each other?

Under the Sun

This documentary shows an average life of an average North Korean family through the eyes of an eight year old girl who dreams about performing during Kim Ir-sen’s birthday celebration. Manskij manages to get incredibly close to the actual people in North Korea and shows us an almost surreal image of the life of an ordinary family in Pyongyang. They are obediently performing the same rituals as millions of their compatriots, as directed by the state’s ideology. Bombastic colorful celebrations are in sharp contrast with the grey everyday reality of the “most beautiful country on the East side of the world.”

Confession of the Vanished

The film portrays the staging of Olimpiade, an opera by Josef Mysliveček, as performed by the Collegium 1704 orchestra conducted by Václav Luks. Together with Ursel Herrman, a German director, the conductor managed to create a masterpiece that was played in Prague as well as in Dijon and Luxembourg. The film sensitively shows both the fragile and passionate aspects of music, using two types of shots – classical camera work for scenic and orchestra rehearsals and handicam used by the director to capture the ambiance of places that still breathe the spirit of the 18th century, despite being transformed over time.
